BRIAN BENNETT

BRIAN BENNETT – “VOYAGE: A JOURNEY INTO DISCOID FUNK” (1978)

Unlike most of its contemporaries, this album — while goofy in parts and certainly a product of its time — is not as stupid as you might think, and holds up upon repeat listenings. Most of the golden elements on display here are courtesy of keyboard guru Francis Monkman, who also composed the excellent film score to “The Long Good Friday”, a British gangster picture which I highly recommend. (Upon last inspection, you can catch the entire film on YouTube.)

Besides, you can’t go wrong with track titles like “Pendulum Force” and “Air Quake”.

Funny, I just came across a reference to this album not two days ago. Apparently it was sampled famously: http://best.complex.com/lists/Kon-Amir-Present-The-50-Greatest-Samples-In-Hip-Hop-History/solstice
