If you’re even a semi-casual reader of this blog, discount rx you’d be able to tell that dancehall reggae is not one of my strong suits. Much of it sounds very similar to me, prostate but there’s something about the tracks compiled on this low-key early-’90s disc that struck a chord with me; I found myself listening to this disc on repeat numerous times during the weeks after I discovered it.

The collection starts off strong, with the bizarre hardcore ranting of Tiger, whose “Gimme De Mike” coming off as a strong contender for “Most Awesomely Weird Vocal Delivery In The Entire Universe”, as if it were one of the conflicting voices resounding in poor Wesley Willis’s schizophrenic brain — but also of note here is “Defend It” by Snagga Puss, who sounds like what would happen if you crossed Lee “Scratch” Perry with Statler & Waldorf from “The Muppet Show.”

interesting side note about wesley willis:
i know a man who worked on the wesley willis documentary (that has yet to come out to my knowledge) and he said though he was very much mentally and socially disabled he had several instances of brillance. for example, after not seeing my friend for almost 2 years he remembered the model, make, color, condition and year of his car. Also, im not sure of the context but someone made some crazy mathmatical comment about something and wesley willis blurted some number which happened to be the exact answer to the equation. so, from my second hand knowledge i would guess wesley willis has some part savant in him.

Who would’ve guessed that a Jamaican guy called “Snagga Puss” would actually sound like a Jamaican version of Snagglepuss?
